Training - Neurosurgery in Sri Lanka
As of 2024, there are 14 neurosurgical centres in Sri Lanka, both in the Government and private sector with 26 neurosurgeons. This is a ratio of 1:850,000 far below the desired ratio of 1: 80,000. The post graduate institute of medicine of the University of Colombo was established in 1979. Sri Lanka produces its own neurosurgeons through a seven-year rigorous training process. Neurosurgical training begins at the post MD (surgery) level. Doctor of Medicine (surgery) is commenced post MD part 1 examination; it is 3 ½ year training in general surgery and related specialties where the trainee is exposed to 3 months of neurosurgery. Candidates who are successful in MD (Surgery) part 2 examination are eligible to select neurosurgery and are appointed as a Neurosurgery Senior Registrar. The neurosurgical training proper includes a mandatory 2 years training segment that has to be completed in Sri Lanka and another 2 years mandatory training segment which has to be completed in a reputed neurosurgery centre overseas.
The candidate is Board Certified as a Neurosurgeon on recommendation by the Specialty Board in neurosurgery.
