Neurosurgery in Sri Lanka

It is indeed a great pleasure to write this message as the incumbent President of the Neurosurgeons Association of Sri Lanka (NSASL). Neurosurgery in Sri Lanka, since its inception as a specialty in 1956, has evolved steadily despite experiencing various drawbacks and losses. As of the year 2023, there are 14 neurosurgical centres in Sri Lanka, both in the Government and private sector with 26 neurosurgeons in-service catering a population of 22 million with advanced and up-to-date neurosurgery.

The need for an active professional organisation dedicated to support the Sri Lankan Neurosurgeons in their clinical practice and academic activities, promoting fellowship and goodwill amongst the Neurosurgeons and take the practice of Neurosurgery to a higher level, was full filled in 2006 by formation of the Neurosurgeons Association of Sri Lanka. Since its inception, NSASL forged ahead slowly and steadily and in late 2023 the present council was able to revive its activities with a new vigor.

NSASL has now widened its collaborations with its counterparts in the region and in the UK. It has formalized the neurosurgical training programme with trainee education activities and assessments that provide the trainee with proper guidance and direction.  NSASL has also embarked on enhancing the knowledge of head injury management among the medical officers in the peripheries through its series of Neurotrauma workshops.

In February 2025, NSASL will hold its 4th Academic Sessions in Colombo in collaboration with the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) and partners in the SAARC region. I welcome all who are interested to this meeting.

Though we are a small community our strengths are strong and diverse. I invite every member –most senior to most junior, to join hands in the activities of NSASL. The synergy of our collective effort and commitment will undoubtedly pave the way for excellence in neurosurgical practice in Sri Lanka.
